About About

Our Origins

Madagascar is an island in the Indian Ocean, to the south-west of the African continent, rich in precious and endemic resources. From 1990 to this day, sapphire mining has contributed to the development of the Ilakaka region. Its gemological characteristics have earned Madagascar international recognition as a singular supplier of sapphires and of precious and semi-precious stones. We respect its heritage and strive to preserve the natural beauty of the great island.

Our Mission

Fair Gems is dedicated to the ethical advancement of the sapphire mining industry in Madagascar, while preserving its natural splendor. Since 2020, we have championed responsible practices as well as sustainability and community growth in the Ilakaka region. Our transparent approach extends from sourcing to the cutting of the diverse stones we offer.

Our Activities

Fair Gems handles the sourcing, cutting and resale of sapphires in a wide range of colors. From the mine to the cutting of your exceptional stones, we ensure the transparency of our production chain and a diversity of stone qualities. We work in partnership with the only automated mine in Madagascar, which guarantees fair wages and safe working conditions for the miners.

for fairness & equality
Equality

We believe that the true value of our work lies in the positive impact it can have on the lives of the people who help bring Madagascan sapphires to the world. Fair Gems pays close attention to working conditions and creates opportunities in education, healthcare and improved livelihoods, to ensure that these stones, unique in all the world, can keep being mined for years to come. Tracking our stones across the entire value chain drives us to constantly improve fairness and equality in our processes, and brings you the most beautiful stones in the world.

Madagascar, the sapphire eldorado

Sapphire reserves in Madagascar have been mentioned in the literature since the 17th century, but mining only began in 1990 and has grown steadily ever since. On a par with Sri Lanka or Myanmar, Madagascar offers unique gems thanks to its extraordinary geological conditions. The great island abounds in pink padparadscha, blue, purple, orange, yellow, green and colorless sapphires, along with other fancy colors waiting to be appreciated at their true worth.
